Mad Max: Fury Road review

Posted : 8 years, 8 months ago on 25 August 2015 06:16 (A review of Mad Max: Fury Road)

This was brilliant! A non-stop chase scene with exhilarating stunts & effects that tell the story. There was such a perfect balance of action and plot even though it was simplistic. Yet the action sequences were the most complex and Helluvalot fun to watch! For almost 2 hours you get stunning explosions, stunts and impressive car driving that would make the Fast & Furious crew wet their pants. Even the characters of Max, Nux & Furiosa were a treat. But the real standout was Immortan Joe as the tyrannical villain who controls most of his people with the water supply.

Furiosa (played by Charlieze Theron) kidnaps Immortan Joe's wives to take them to the Green place to start a new life. This pisses Joe off and sets out to get them back since all of them are pregnant with his children. How Max gets involved in all of this is by accident. He gets caught and strung up as a blood bag for a group of kamikaze-like "soldiers" known as War Boys. Nux, a War Boy himself, joins in the hunt for the wives by taking his blood bag which so happens to be Max.

Whether he likes it or not, Max eventually is stuck having to help Furiosa and in his helping redemption for past losses is redeemed. Not just for Max, but for Furiosa as well.

Tom Hardy who takes over for Mel Gibson as Max is a perfect choice. Hardy who is known for being Bane in The Dark Knight Rises is able to give both a mysterious performance and a kick-ass one.

The only thing that bothers me though was that when this movie was first released it didn't get the #1 spot at the box office. It went to Pitch Perfect 2 which I think showed exactly how fucked up this generation is when it comes to movies. Because this was the best movie of 2015...so far anyways.

Seventh Son review

Posted : 8 years, 8 months ago on 25 August 2015 05:04 (A review of Seventh Son)

This wasn't that bad. Aside from Jeff Bridges mumbling through out the film, it was actually a worthy piece of Fantasy/Adventure filmmaking. I really liked it. It had that old school appeal when it came to witches and sorcery. Reminded me a little bit of a Nic Cage flick called 'Season of the Witch'.

Sadly the critics hated Seventh Son (and Season of the Witch for that matter) and it didn't do to well at the box office either. It's a bit sad when other Fantasy pictures don't get the much needed attention they deserve. I understand that nothing can beat our Game of Thrones or even Lord of the Rings, but C'mon! There are some really genuinely decent Fantasy/Adventure films out there just waiting to found and some of them are really good, if not better, than your LOTR or GOT counterparts.

Take for example films like 'Solomon Kane' or 'Black Death'. These films have value and are entertaining.

Except for Eragon. That movie sucked!

Blackhat review

Posted : 8 years, 8 months ago on 25 August 2015 03:35 (A review of Blackhat)

This was a hugely shallow attempt at making a cyber crime thriller. I can't understand how director Michael Mann could have botched this up, but then I remember what he did in Miami Vice and Public Enemies and I realize I should have known better. Blackhat had the potential of being a cyber thriller, but instead it was squandered by not pushing the envelope. Too much is overly sentimentalized with the characters of Nicholas Hathaway and Chen Lien (Chris Hemsworth & Tang Wei) sharing their love like two adolescents in many, many scenes. Those scenes bog down the movie tremendously.

As a thriller it doesn't thrill in the way you'd expect. Everything is in slow-mo as emotions run high for atmosphere and "action" runs low to bore the audience. Including the acting. Everyone seemed to be phoning in their acting chops here including Chris Hemsworth who seems oddly out of place in this. Like as if Michael Mann wanted Brad Pitt, but had to settle for Chris instead.

If I had to give one little positive to this mess it would be that the camerawork was amazing. There are many shots in this movie that were beautiful to look at. Unfortunately, I can't say the same about the story or acting.
